Bipolar Disorder: An Overview

By Sean Davids

Bipolar disorder is a very serious disease that can have symptoms that range from mild to very severe. The ups and downs or highs and lows that a person suffering from bipolar disorder goes through are not the same as what a person who does not suffer from it experiences every now and again. A person with bipolar disorder will experience mood swings that can range from low (which is depression) to high or very high (which is mania). This type of disease sometimes gets confused with other forms of depression and therefore requires attention and a proper diagnosis.

The causes of bipolar disorder are not completely understood by the medical community. However, doctors have noted that it does tend to run in families and therefore a genetic predisposition to develop it is suspected. It is believed that bipolar disorder is related to certain chemicals in the brain that have gotten out of balance. When this happens, it then makes it more difficult for the brain to do its work. Doctors also believe that bipolar disorder and hormone levels are connected with each other. Studies have shown that a link exists between the development of bipolar disorder and thyroid hormone levels.

Presently there are 5.7 million adults in the United States who are living with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder affects both males and females and it does not discriminate according to race, ethnic group, geographical location or socioeconomic class. The disorder most often develops when a person is in their late teens to early twenties. In fact, it is theorized that over half of those diagnosed with bipolar disorder develop it before they reach the age of 25. Children can also develop bipolar disorder although it is less common for it to appear at this time in a person's life. However there have been cases where bipolar disorder has been diagnosed in children who are as young as six years of age.

It is not uncommon for bipolar disorder to be misdiagnosed as depression. For example, in those who suffer from bipolar II disorder the manic episodes are known as hypomania and are oftentimes so mild that they go completely unnoticed by others. This may account for the fact that the episodes of depression in a person with bipolar II disorder outnumber the episodes of mania by approximately 35 to 1.

Approximately half of all individuals who suffer from bipolar disorder visited three professional members of the healthcare community before a proper diagnosis was made. In the same way, an estimated 20 percent of those who go to see their doctor because they are depressed actually suffer from bipolar disorder. It is a sorry state of affairs to discover that it takes an average of 10 years for a person with bipolar disorder who is showing the symptoms to begin treatment and therapy, because it often takes this length of time for the diagnosis to be made. - 29881

Health Maintenance Through The FSC

By Dmitriy Volokhovskiy

Improving one's health can and should be done at any time of the year. Sometimes there might be a cost involved but when it comes to self improvement, no cost is too great. As a part of health maintenance, it's important to find the best way to feel better, faster.

There are so many pressures in the modern world that people face. From poverty to depression to unhealthy environments, people the world over have hard things to handle. However, it is very important to work towards health maintenance regardless of the difficulties a person is facing.

Question yourself. Ask yourself how great it would be if every day you woke up ready to greet a new world of possibilities and creativity? Wouldn't it be wonderful to experience positive thoughts all day long? And how great would it be to know that every minute of every day, your life and your health are improving?

The people of Russia know about hard times and hard lives. So it's no wonder that they've found a way to rise above the difficulties that they face when trying to focus on health maintenance. With their traditional beliefs that everything in the natural living world is connected by longitudinal electromagnetic waves, they have found ways to feel better. Simple things like leaning against a tree can improve a person's energy but not everyone has a tree to lean against.

An FSC or Functional State Corrector is a device built around a magnetic field scalar component that intentionally and positively affects the body's biorhythms. From improving immunity to cleaning the liver to increasing a person's creative capabilities, the FSC is offering so many people a chance to improve their daily health maintenance without having to change their diet in strict ways or add difficult exercise regimens to their existing routines.

Depression is common today, as stress levels rise and the ever-present negative energies of the world weigh each person down. The FSC helps a person connect to the natural world again, helping them benefit from the existing connections other creatures and objects of the natural world are experiencing already. Made by the intellects behind the Russian space program, the FSC is a simple device that fits in a person's pocket and every day improves their health maintenance. It might be something to look into if you already know that your self improvement is worth everything.

The simple and cost-effective alternative is to take proper health care by means of some preventive measures. There is a completely new approach for doing these. Russian scientists created a new type health maintenance device, called the Functional State Corrector or shortly the FSC. The device responds to the human aura distortions with an adequate correction. The strength of the corrective influence is proportional to the strength of the distortion. It's resembles a feedback loop, that monitors the perfect state of its owner. When everything is fine, the device stays silent. When one start to use an FSC, the psychological level responds at the very first day. It makes the FSC a perfect prophylaxis remedy. More than that, all kinds of stress, anxiety, depression, fears are the first victims. The state of mind changes to positive from the first day of the FSC use.

It is a perfect solution for busy people, for those people always in public who find it difficult to spare time for themselves. Because the only thing You need to do with an FSC is to have it! No exercises, no affirmations, no meditations it simply works by itself. Like a cat it should be nearby and that's all. On the FSC presentation one young woman said: "But it is a Magic Wand, it does everything for You". - 29881

Depression Without Sadness: Alternative Presentations Of Depression In Late Life.

By Pedro Toledo

Depression is one condition that many people encounter today. It can be caused by a wide variety of factors surrounding the person. It can be caused by one's job, family, friends and even finances. Consequentially, it has many different adverse effects as well. Although it affects the way people live their lives, people disregard its presence. However, just like other conditions, depression can worsen if not addressed.

Genetic factors: According to WHO, it has been consistently observed that depression tends to run in families. For the uninitiated, genes are like computer chips within our body that hardwire or pre-program us towards certain physical or physiological predispositions. The BlackDog Institute (Australia) suggests that "the genetic risk of developing depression is about 40%, with the remaining 60% being due to factors in the individual's own environment". For example, in 2003, a New Zealand study suggested a certain gene - responsible for the transportation of serotonin - in conjunction with a serious life stressor was responsible for depression (Caspi A et. al. Science 301: 386-389). At the time, this was heralded as a significant breakthrough in the understanding and treatment depression.

Maybe the most difficult problem about treating depression and its symptoms is that people are not really aware they are having depression, and they feel as if it is all part of their own shortcomings to feel the way they are feeling. They blame themselves for what is happening and they don't like to talk about it at all.

For instance, a 2005 study suggested that there is very little scientific evidence that depression is caused by a biochemical imbalance, despite it commonly and frequently being presented in the media as fact (Lacasse JR, Leo J: Serotonin and Depression: A Disconnect between the Advertisements and the Scientific Literature). The results of studies conducted and withheld by pharmaceutical companies were examined. According to the researchers, the chemical imbalance theory, which was formulated in the 1960's, was based on the observation that mood could be artificially altered with drugs, rather than a direct observation of any chemical imbalances. The reality is, "researchers know very little about how anti-depressants work, there is no test that can measure the amount of serotonin in the living brain, no way to know what a low or normal serotonin level is - let alone show that depression medication fixes these levels". An example commonly used is, "while antidepressant drugs increase levels of serotonin, this doesn't mean that depression is caused by a serotonin shortage. After all, aspirin may cure a headache, but it doesn't mean that headaches are caused by an aspirin deficiency" (helpguide.org/mental/medications_depression.htm).

Surrounding ones self with positive things and keeping an optimistic attitude at all times is also another practical way to overcome depression. The principle behind this technique is to attract all positive things and thoughts. Getting rid of the pessimism and letting the positive energy in can have an enormous effect on the way one sees things.

Resorting to the practical and natural ways to get rid of depression instead of using medications is far more effective in the long term. Natural and practical remedies to depression lead to self improvement without the costs and without the hassles. - 29881

A Broad Summary Pertaining To Panic Attacks Information

By William Fisher

Panic attacks are a reaction to irrational fears and involves various symptoms like increased heart rate, dizziness and breathing problems. These few symptoms tend to be common to everyone having panic attacks although there are a number of others that could occur.

They are usually stimulated by an irrational fear. While everyone has different fears the link is having a fear itself. Many people think they are having heart attacks when it is actually a panic attack while others worry they ma be dying. The first time that a person suffers a panic attack they normally do not understand what is happening. By understanding panic attacks many people feel a lot better about them and it can even lessen their attacks. The original fear often take s back seat to the fear of having another panic attack.

There are a variety of treatment options of panic attacks but a lot of sufferers don't seek help. Therapy, medications and relaxation techniques can help individuals to be rehabilitated. Behavioral therapy allows the person to feel some of the symptoms of a panic attack but helps the person to see that the symptom itself is nothing to fear. This technique has been named interceptive exposure. For instance, the individual might be encouraged to bring on some of the sensations of a panic attack like an increased heart rate. Through this it is possible to learn and disengage the sensation from the fear of a panic attack. Life exposure is also used in behavioral therapy. This would involve being exposed to certain 'stress point' so they can become accustomed to them.

There are many kinds of relaxation techniques that have shown themselves useful for panic attacks. First of all it is helpful to relax their shoulders when they feel a panic attack building. By knowing about the tension within the neck, the person can then learn how to relieve it. Relax the rest of the body's muscles to reach the goal of total body relaxation. Controlling your breathing is also extremely important to overcoming a panic attacks.

This is because panic attacks normally elevate your heart rate. On method is to breath slowly and as if trying to blow out candles. An important thing for the person to remind themselves is that they are not going crazy and they are not going to die. It is these fears that further escalate a panic attack.

Panic attacks are a form of a panic disorder created by anxiety. There are several ways that people demonstrate their anxiety through a panic disorder. Centered around a traumatic event, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is another kind of anxiety related panic disorder. A panic disorder also might express itself as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD. This kind of anxiety disorder involves having unwanted thoughts or obsessions that can't be removed from the person's thinking. This is why many OCD sufferers perform repeated and ritualistic behaviors. - 29881

What Will Happen If I Ignore My Panic Attacks?

By Greg Anderson

Panic attacks do not get better, they get worse. Sometimes it takes a while, and sometimes the panic attacks begin accelerating right away, but they just do not resolve themselves without any help. Usually panic attacks start in the adolescent years, but occasionally later onset is seen.

Typically, an average adolescent who starts having panic attacks during his or her teenage years and does not seek treatment will continue to suffer from panic attacks. These panic attacks can last for the entire duration of a person's lifespan.

If panic attacks do not get treated they tend to cause additional problems. Often, these other problems are closely related to the dread of having other panic attacks. Some patients are so terrified of having attacks that they do almost anything to avoid them, but this usually does not work out because of the fact that panic attacks really can not be accurately predicted. Hiding from panic attacks will not work, and it can sometimes just make them much worse.

Other Problems That Panic Attacks Can Cause

Many complications can arise as a result of panic attacks. These complications can differ as each person is unique, but the following are some of the more common results that are seen with panic attacks, especially ones that are not treated. These complications include: Depression, phobias, failure in school, problems at work, money issues, drug or alcohol problems, and social problems.

Also, people who have panic disorder, which is the parent disorder of panic attacks, are at a higher medical risk for heart disease. Research into the link continues.

Should you allow your panic attacks to be untreated, fairly severe problems can usually be expected. The fact is that panic attacks simply will not improve unless you get them treated. In order to get them under control in the best way possible, they should be dealt with as early as possible. A really good program that uses psychological techniques that have simple methods to back them up is the Panic Away program. There is no medication, you will be using your own brain power to get panic attacks out of your life.

Panic attacks are a crippling problem and everyone deserves to live a life free of this problem. If you suffer from panic attacks, getting treatment will be the best thing you can possibly do for yourself. - 29881

How Problems Within The Family Leads To Depression

By John Bryan

One of the biggest emotional problems that almost a lot of people experience is actually depression. There are many causes and also many reasons of depression. Some of those reasons are a chemical imbalance in your body. While others are caused by other issues. One of those very common issues that we are going to look at is family issues.

Family issues are a very traumatic problem when they occur. This is mostly due to the fact that family is such an intimate part of our lives. So when a problem within the family occurs it really makes sense that it can actually and eventually cause problems like depression. This is one of the biggest reasons clients come see my in my depression counseling service. Because it is highly significant to address any family problems as soon as possible.

Depending on what the family problem is will eventually determine the correct course of action that is needed to fix the depression. For example if it is a marital problem then counseling is a great way to try and resolve the depression. When I get families with relationship problems in my family counselor practice I always try to get them into a regular counseling session. It is within these sessions that we can address the depression aspect of it.

Now if the problem gets worse and the fighting starts to escalate where the marriage is in trouble then serious counseling is needed. As a couples therapy practice what I try to do is try to have sessions with them. These sessions are designed to get to the root of the problem.

The goal is to find out what is causing the issues then dealing directly with it. Because a lot of times the root issues are not understood. Well a good counseling session can surely help resolve this issue.

So, depression is, as mentioned, a very powerful emotion that can be very harmful as well. And as mentioned, in cases of family problems causing them, then absolutely there are solutions available. - 29881
