Suffer From Chronic Pain, Depression And Illness?

By Anju Mathur, MD

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a flu-like condition that can drain your energy and sometimes last for years. People previously healthy and full of energy make experience a variety of symptoms.

People recover from flu in days or weeks. But with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) recovery is rare. The symptoms are similar to flu, and a tiredness that never improves no matter how much sleep a person gets. It can worsen with mental or physical exercise. Sometimes the symptoms come and go with no regular pattern.

According to Center for Disease Control (CDC) between one and four million Americans suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). They are seriously impaired, at least a quarter are unemployed or on disability because of CFS. Forty percent of people in the general population who report symptoms of CFS have a serious, treatable, previously unrecognized medical condition.

Chronic fatigue syndrome may precipitate after an infection, such as a cold or viral illness or after a time of great stress. It can also come on gradually without a clear starting point or obvious cause. Women are diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome far more often than men are.

Conventional medicine favors the idea that it's "all in your head." This leads to no remedy at all as the patient is sent to psychologists who prescribe harmful drugs. Sometimes a physical therapist or sleep therapist or dietitian get involved. But mainly medicos tell the patient to learn to live with it.

But you don't have to learn to live with it. The symptoms are not just something you thought up in your mind. A medical doctor trained to work with alternative medicine can find the cause and help you treat CFS. The disease can be reversed and you will get back your vitality and energy. There are ways to produce results - not experimental procedures, but proven therapies.

A very important factor in treating both fibromyalgia and CFS is diet. You can eat foods that alleviate pain and depression or you can eat foods that exacerbate pain and depression. Eating refined carbohydrates will worsen both conditions, and eating slow-burning carbohydrates high in fiber will improve it. Pain is increased when consuming saturated fats and refined vegetable oils, and decreased when consuming omega-3 faty acids instead. How you feel is very much related to what you eat.

Food allergies are often missed as a cause of CFS and fibromyalgia. A competent doctor can evaluate for food allergies.

Natural supplements can also restore the dwindling amounts of seratonin in the brain. Serotonin regulates mood, and a lack of it causes depression. A deficiency can also increase pain sensation. Remedies such as St. John's wort, SAMe and 5-HTP are much safer and effective at treating depression than Prozac or other anti-depressants, and the natural remedies do not have the harmful side effects as does Prozac. Much solid research has been done to back this up, not to mention the happy patients who applaud the doctors who use them. So if you are suffering from depression, fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, or any combination of those, there is help for you that really works. - 29881
