How To Treat Anxiety With Herbal Remedies?

By Sandy Adamson

Herbal remedies have become more and more popular in the treatment of anxiety attacks. This is majorly due to the fact that traditional medications have proven to be addictive and produce harmful side effects. In the context of the "going natural" trend, herbal remedies are gaining attention.

In general, herbs used for treating anxiety are selected based on their anti-anxiety ingredients. Some of the more commonly-known herbs are:

1. Kava Kava Extracted from the Kava Kava crops in the western pacific, Kava Kava is largely used in anxiety treatment for its tranquility delivering effect. Kava kava is also recommended as it is non-addictive, but it may cause violent allergic reactions to a very small group of people.

2. Valerian Root Extracted from the Valerian flower plant, Valerian Root, too, is an effective tranquilizer and is largely used in control symptoms associated with insomnia and epilepsy. Valerian exact can take effect on you in just an hour, but it is mildly addictive as compared to other herbal remedies.

3. St. John's Wort Another name for St. John's Wort is Klamath weed or Goat weed, and it is used in treating anxiety for its depression-combating ingredients. In some areas, this type of herb is more often prescribed than the traditional medications in treating mild depression.

4. Others Other commonly used herbal remedies in anxiety and panic treatment include passion flower, lemon balms, hops, chamomile, magnesium, B-complex, etc.

Although there is no argument over the popularity of herbal remedies, are they really effective in treating anxiety? Can you solely rely on herbal drugs to treat your symptoms? At this moment, you may not be able to get a positive answer, as there is no evidence yet to show that herbal alone can effectively combat anxiety. Despite that you may come across manufacturers' claims or customers' testimonies on how effective herbal remedies can treat anxiety on its own, the reality is that traditional medications and behavioral therapies are still dominating the medical world in fighting against anxiety. At the very best, herbal remedies are complimenting the two major treatment measures. That being said, herbs are still a preferred choice for being less addictive and producing less side effects.

If your anxiety problem is only minor, your doctor may recommend herbal supplements prior to stronger medications. In case you are purchasing herbs for anxiety treatment by your own, you should be careful with those herbal drugs that seem to come out of no where. As with every single industry, some manufacturers are more reliable than the others, and you should do yourself a favor to check them out. You can always consult your doctor for a good recommendation if you would like to skip your homework. - 29881
