Treating Social Anxiety Disorder

A fairly 'new' anxiety, Social Anxiety disorder was overlooked for quite a long while by the medical community as it was often confused with shyness. That being said, the drug companies haven't been backward and there are as many Social Anxiety medications on the market as there are other anxiety medications although truly most anti anxiety drugs are suitable for all types of anxiety disorders. Only a very few drugs are completely anxiety specific, so a general mild anti anxiety medication will probably work just as well as specific Social Anxiety medications.

Social anxiety in simple English is fear of social situations and trying hard to avoid them altogether. A shy person may avoid social activities, but for someone with this social anxiety disorder this is not usually the case. They would probably find themselves, feeling anxious in a specific social situation and this could lead them to panic attacks too. Social anxiety can occur due to experiencing a humiliating situation and this can cause a person to have a sudden change of attitude from joyous and fun mood to a nervous wreck.

When you are sure that you really have Social Anxiety disorder; you can now use the specific medication to treat the condition. Don't just assume that you have the disorder. Try to evaluate yourself against these symptoms or else you might just be suffering from shyness.

You can tell the difference between Social Anxiety disorders simply by acknowledging the fact that the symptoms of this disorder are the extreme end of feelings of what a normal shy person would be experiencing. Fear of being socially humiliated, fear of being embarrassed, sensitive of surroundings, shortness of breath, sweaty hands, trembling and twitching as well as palpitations, nausea, lightheadedness, feeling incompetent, and extreme anxiety. All these are signs that you probably do have social anxiety disorder.

Social Anxiety disorder is better treated in the early stages using the right medication. This is so that the person suffering from it need not suffer for too long. Apart from taking drugs, there are many other methods available such therapy which have been proven to be very beneficial for patients with this disorder. You can discuss with your doctor the method that would best suit you. Get your self treated soon or you'll miss out on all the wonderful opportunity you can gain in social gatherings and affairs.
