Common Substance Abuses

By James Handforth

Addiction is a term used for the specific behaviour of a person in which, he or she becomes entirely dependent on the something. It is a common fact that it is a type of syndrome, which increases with time and eventually worsens indeed.

Substance addiction is a common form of addiction that many people know about and acknowledge. Some substances are more addictive than others are, either because they cause a rapid and intense change in mood, or because they produce painful withdrawal symptoms when stopped suddenly.

Several substance addictions are there, but the most commonly known is the alcoholism. It is considered as the most commonly occurring substance addiction. You can get alcohol from most of the places even from the places where it is legally prohibited. There are several countries, which restrict the use of alcohol up to certain age limit. It is not considered an issue to use alcohol in many countries; however, age limit is defined. If you continue using a substance for longer time duration, it may end up in addiction to that substance. There are several negative aspects of getting addicted to anything. For instance, using alcohol in excessive amounts may lead to addiction due to which, the chances of crimes, abuses, and other impairments as well increase.

Tobacco addiction also comes under substance abuse. A smoker is not exactly addicted to cigarettes, but rather the nicotine they contain. An addiction to smoking makes it hard for a smoker to give up the highly unhealthy habit, which can cause diseases, such as lung cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, etc.

When one refers to substance addiction, the first thing that usually comes to mind is drugs, which is a very common form of substance addiction. This can include legal drugs such as medication obtained via a prescription, or illegal drugs that are not supposed to be available.

Another from of addiction that most people do not always consider is food addiction, even though it is becoming increasingly common. This sort of addiction is of another type known as process addiction. Food is a necessity of life, and everyone needs it in order to survive. However, a food addict is unable to control the amount of food consumed. Food addicts generally use food as a way to deal with emotions, such as sadness, depression, or anxiety. This can lead to eating disorders, and conditions, such as obesity. It is a form of psychological dependency, which is an addiction of the mind, and causes psychological withdrawal symptoms such as cravings, anorexia.

Another most common type of addiction is of food. People do not consider it as an addiction, but it is rapidly increasing. It is also referred as process addiction. Food is the fundamental requirement of every individual, and is needed for his survival indeed. On the other hand, if the consumed amount of food goes beyond the required amount, then it is known as bulimia. It eventually results in obesity. People eat food as a substitute, or for suppressing their emotional disorders. The withdrawal symptoms are quite intense, such as anorexia and cravings. Another addiction is known to be internet addiction. It is in fact a psychological dependence. When a person is not having the facility of internet, he feels impulsive, and longs for internet. Internet has many useful aspects but if it is used regularly, it may cause psychological dependence. These mentioned types are the most commonly observed addictions. You can get rid of these addictions with the help of rehabilitation centres. - 29881
